Pupa Description

Variably colored brown.

Adults Description

Sexes slightly dimorphic. Distinguished all other species by a dirty yellow forewing band in males (paler in females); distal half of hindwing upperside has a reddish blush that extends to tornus.

Habits Description

Common and widespread from sea level to 1,200 m. This species occurs in all forest and second growth where there is no pronounced dry season, but is occasionally found in lowland areas of Guanacaste. It is generally more common in second- growth areas where there are abundant Heliconia thickets, but it occurs as uncommon solitary individuals in primary rain forest. Frequently seen at dusk near human habitations, where both sexes feed on rotting fruits and occasionally dung.
